Are there downsides to topical finasteride?

Yes. The known reactions fall into four groups. Application-site skin reactions are the most common, followed by sexual side effects at lower rates than oral finasteride but not zero, then mood and cognitive symptoms such as low mood or brain fog, and finally a contact-transfer risk to a pregnant partner. Is topical finasteride safer than oral?

On balance, yes, but not risk-free. A phase III trial found peak plasma levels more than 100 times lower on topical than oral, with an adverse-event profile close to placebo, and a 2025 pharmacovigilance study found fewer PFS-like signals on topical than oral.[1:5][3:3] Lower is not zero, so monitoring still matters. Does 0.1% topical finasteride have side effects?

Yes. Every concentration of topical finasteride, including the lower 0.1% formulation, can produce side effects, because the drug is still absorbed into the bloodstream. The dose-response relationship for systemic effects is real, so a lower concentration generally means lower exposure, but it does not eliminate risk. The 0.25% strength is more commonly studied, and the 0.1% strength rests on a thinner evidence base.

What happens after 2 months of finasteride?

Are topical finasteride side effects permanent?
